Hi!
First, sorry for writin' in english, but my german is only good enough to read .
It's a 09.06 bike, now with 4500 kms. This problem seems to exist from the very first kms - only it did not get the "treatment" it gets nowadays.
First the problem: when the engine becomes warm (4 stripes) after a while it fills the compansating tank with cooling liquid when it gets hard loads (for example a sudden accelerating till 8000-9000 RPMs). When it's full, the water spills out. After the engine cooled down the water remains in the compensating tank and there's vacuum in the radiator.
The normal thermal expansion works well, it changes the level with only 1-2 cm-s in the compensating tank.
The water heat does not goes above 4 stripes (only sometimes 5 but the fan immadiately cools it down).
The thermostat opens and closes properly - it warms up in 2 kms and keeps the proper temperature.
The waterpump also works well - it'd boil up as soon as it'd stop.
There's no visible water leaks.
The oil and the water is clean, no dirt, no foam.
I changed the radiator cap, and refilled the whole cooling system with liquid again. It was a bit wierd, it only needed 1.5 l of liquid, not 2.1 l as it was written.
Any ideas?
Thx

One more data: it pushes almost all of the water (all of if from the radiator for sure) on only 15 kms on hard winding serpentine road.

Hi Peter,
first of all - welcome to the community!
Your problem sounds like air in the cooling circuit. I don't know, is there any possibilty to vent it like the hydraulics for the brakes? _________________ Viele Grüße... Uwe

Thanx for the welcome! :)
I also thought this, that's why I refilled the whole system. We made it with the local dealer. There are 2 airvent screws, one on the left side of the radiator and one is the upper screw on the waterpump's lid.
I let all of the cooling liquid to flow out of the bike opening the 2 drain screws. After a few minutes of waiting I started to fill the system up - as it's written in the official repair manual. It only swallowed 1.6l instead of the 2.1l they mentioned, but the mechanic said it's normal - for example the LC4 also swallows less with 2-3 dl, if they do not open and dry the whole engine.

Hello Peter !
At first a warm welcome, too.
I had a nearly similar problem right after the 1000km Inspection.
If I drove with high RPM ( 8-9000 Rpm ) for a while the machine began to press out water from the overflow tube of the compensating tank. I comes out of the right side of the bike direct on the boot an trouser.
My first reaction was shocking, stop immideatly and check it. Everything looks OK.
At home I checked the Level of liquid in the compensating tank ( Enging is cool )
and the tank was nearly full. So my dealer out in too much water in the system.
After leveling the water short under the Max-Marker everything is OK now.
When I understood right it`s not OK at your side, after you have done nearly the same.
Greetings

Thanx again :)
Ok, it pushes the water out of it's too much, I knew that. But it pushes almost all of it from the radiator .
And as much as I know there sould be never vacuum in the radiator. A bit overpressure is normal, but not vacuum... The water boils much easily on less airpressure.

Sounds like a very different problem.
And Yes, vacuum is not normal.
Maybe Rainer Kroll from KTM Sommer has a n idea.

Hello,
please do a DOUBLE and TRIPLE venting of cooling system. (Ist venting richtig für Entlüftung??). Each air has to be out of cooling system.
If your bike has a main stand, it is necessary to work only with one screw in waterpump AND push all rubbertubes of cooling system to move the air.
If bike has side stand ,use additional the screw in left cooler.
furthermore look to have a clean rubber in radiatorcap.
(Can all be done by dealer).
if you have no success now, dealer has to control the cylinderhead gasket.
best regards sommer ktm rainer kroll |

Hm...
I'll do it, I had no better idea. Maybe I should change the dealer's testbike's cooling system with mine to check it.
I have both of the stands, after the comfort of the LC4 Adventure's main stand it was the extra I asked for my bike.
Venting looks proper for Entlüftung und Ich kann beide verstanden.
It seems Ich bin the most cosmopolitischer hier, mit der schlecter Rechtscreibung.
So do not force me to use my german in writing or you'll burn in Hell. :)
I'll report back as soon as I managed to make the repairs.
Is it important to make the refill/venting with cool engine, or can it be 40-50 Celcius warm?

"Is it important to make the refill/venting with cool engine, or can it be 40-50 Celcius warm?"
Howdy Peter!
I would say the water and system should be cool.
Because, if you take a look in the oerating instruction for checking the coolant level they advise you to control the Level if the water / system is cool.
So, I think for a proper Level control after changing the water the system must be cooled down.
May the KTM Sommer force corrrect me , if I`m wrong
regards
Georg

Hi Szepy/ Peter,
a warm welcome to you too. Unfortunately I can't help you with this problem.
Don't despair - Rainer Kroll will help you with all of his knowledge, and it's huge.
